Using G3 Broadband with Linux (HUAWEI E220) 1 Year, 6 Months ago Karma: 3
I had few tough days recently, when I was trying to get my 3G broadband device (Huawei E220)working on Linux. At the end I realized that it was just nothing.. Really,,,,,.. Anyhow I noticed that non of those guides and very useful for a person who is new to Linux.

Thought of writing a short guide about using E220 or another supported 3G broadband device on Linux without even keying a single command.

This article is written specially to be posted over CodeGreed. Tagging this post or adding reference links is 100% LEGAL, but adding mirrors, duplicates or copping contents from this article without our permission is 100% ILLEGAL.

OK, No 1 is drivers. But when it comes to HUAWEI E220 it is natively supported by most of those new Linux system. So no need to worry about drivers if you are an up-to-date Linux user.

Please note that I'm suing openSUSE 10.3 (which is not the latest) with KDE. If you are using a different distribution or a desktop environment please adjust these steps to suite your system. Please be kind enough to mention those changes in this same thread as a reply. It'll help some other user who is seeking for support.

-------------
Step 01
-------------

  • Plug in your HUAWEI E220.

  • Open YaST Control Center (Or the control center of your distribution)

  • Select "Hardware Information" option under "Hardware" section

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • Expand USB sub-category and note down the identifier for the USB port where you have plugged E220 (In my PC it's /dev/ttyUSB0 - Please check below image)

Click on the image to view it in original size:

-------------
Step 02
-------------

  • Make sure, you have installed KPPP Modem Dialing Tool which is provided with your distribution

  • If you are using opesSUSE, open YaST. Select "Software Management" under "Software" section and search for "KPPP". Install dialler using the installation DVD as you install other packages.

-------------
Step 03
-------------

  • In the KMenu, select "Applications". Under "Internet" category select "Internet Dial-up Tool". (I'm using KDE so please adjust this if you are using some other desktop environment)

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • Click on "Configure" button

  • Select "Modem" tab

  • Click "New"

  • Give a name to your modem

  • Select the USB port identifier name you noted in Step No1, under modem device section

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • Select "Modem" tab

  • Un-check the "Wait for dial tone before dialing" option

  • Click "OK" ((DON'T click "Quarry Modem" button right now))

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • You'll see your new modem in the list now. Select it and click "Edit"

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • Go to "Modem" tab

  • Click "Quarry Modem" button

  • Check weather you get below output.. If not don't proceed. Double check what you did before. You might have selected the wrong "USB port identifier" or you device is not supported natively by the distribution you are using.

Click on the image to view it in original size:

-------------
Step 04
-------------

  • Go back to the "KPPP Configuration window"

  • Select "Account" tab

  • Click on "New" button. You'll see below message. Click on "Manual Setup" button.

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • Type a connection name (Ya... Anything)

  • Click "Add" and add the number you have to dial in order to connect to the ISP (For me it's *99***1# as I'm using Dialog 3G broadband)

  • Select "Authentication" mood as "Script-based"

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • Click OK

  • Click OK in KPPP configuration window too

Click on the image to view it in original size:

-------------
Step 05
-------------

Well that was easy... Now here begins the hardest part.... I was just joking. Now what you have to do is connecting to the internet..

Click on the image to view it in original size:

  • Click "Connect" button of "KPPP" window

  • *** HERE WE GO... CONNECTED TO THE INTERNET USING DIALOG 3G BROADBAND OVER LINUX ***

  • [li]/li]

ENJOY

Please check oozie.fm.interia.pl/pro/huawei-e220/ if above mentioned steps are not going to work for your distribution, due to a problem with drives. That means if you are stuck in Step 3

Just a note :

Newest version of almost every distributions are going to support G3 Broadband devices by default. Tested it with OpenSuse, Debian, Ubuntu and my favorite Mint.

You just have to select the service provider after plug the device in.

If your service provider is not listed you can always manually configure. (Number is *99***1# or *99# in many occasions)
